Letters of
Support from U.S. Congress
for Vigil rally
in San Jose, California and Houston, Texas to Vietnamese Community
Zoe Lofgren,
Tom Delay and Sheila Jackson Lee
Dear Friends:
It has been a joy to join with members of the Vietnamese American community to work towards increased human rights in Vietnam. I have joined religious, community and national leaders to try and influence America’s foreign policy with the Vietnamese Government. We all agree that America must insist that human rights in Vietnam are protected before we consider changes in our foreign policy with Vietnam.
This week, I was honored to join with Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez in honoring Dr. Doan Viet Hoat with a Congressional Resolution. Dr. Hoat’s willingness to sacrifice his own freedom to try and improve the lives of people in Vietnam is heroic. His commitment to bringing about democratic change to Vietnam has inspired me and others to continue to insist on improved human rights for the people of Vietnam.
We must also work together to improve the lives of Vietnamese Americans--those who have come to America to build a better life for themselves and their families.
I appreciate your support, and I look forward to continue to work to improve the lives of your friends and families, both in Vietnam, and here in the United States.
Sincerely,
Zoe Lofgren

Dear Friends:
Please
allow me to commend all of you participating in the candlelight vigil in
support of Vietnamese people all over the
world.
I applaud you for standing up for human rights and democracy for all citizens.
I
regret that my schedule does not allow me to attend the candlelight vigil
this weekend. Nonetheless, I did not want to let
this
opportunity pass by without expressing my sincere appreciation to each
of you for taking the time to demonstrate your
support
for Vietnam and disapproval of human rights abuses across the world. People
of all races, creed, and color unite
with
you on this evening in your celebration of democracy and human rights for
all. It is an honor to serve you in the United
States
House of Representatives.
Sincerely
(Signed)

Dear Friends:
On
behalf of the constituents of the Eighteenth Congressional District of
Texas, I am writing to support you and your rally for
greater
recognition of the conditions within Vietnam. I have been following the
protests which have been occurring in
California,
and I must say that the insensitive display of both the Vietnamese communist
flag and the portrait of Ho Chi Minh
have
provoked an appropriate and passionate response from the Vietnamese community.
I
have been a fervent supporter of human rights for all of the citizens of
Vietnam. During the 105th Congress, I endeavored to
focus
attention on the atrocities committed by the communist regime, while insisting
on the release of all political and
religious
prisoners within Vietnam. In fact, I share a strong desire to see that
all citizens of Vietnam enjoy the benefits of a
democracy
which is committed to achieving human rights for all.
Please
know that you have my full support as you rally in Houston. I will make
an effort to keep the focus on those citizens of
Vietnam
whose basic human rights are restricted.
Sincerely,
(Signed)
